Press Brake Buyer’s Guide — How to Choose

Torsion bar vs electro-hydraulic vs all-electric. Tonnage, length, controller, and frame — what actually matters when you buy a press brake.

1. Tonnage and Bed Length

Tonnage depends on material thickness and bend length. As a rule of thumb, thicker and harder material needs more tonnage — but a real quote should be based on your actual parts, bend radius, and die opening.

Bed length must cover your longest part. A 3.2m bed handles most sheet work; longer parts need 4m, 6m or up to 9m beds.

3. Controller

DRO — digital display of positions; operator-driven. Fine for simple, repeatable work.

CNC (Estun, DELEM, Cybelec) — programmed bends, angle correction, back gauge automation, and recipe storage. For batch production, CNC pays for itself quickly.

4. Frame and Hydraulic Press Types

  • C-frame (YDW41) — 3-sided access, compact, lighter duty.
  • Straight-side / H-frame (YDW27) — closed frame, highest rigidity for precision pressing.
  • Four-post (YDW32) — the workhorse for deep drawing and general pressing.
  • Gantry (YDW78) — oversized parts that travel under the press on rails.
